Gideon – Part 1
Judges six and seven gives a powerful testimony of the life of a man named Gideon. This passage absolutely struck me. It is amazing how powerfully and personally God’s presence was with Gideon. When the angel (who is thought to be one of Jesus’ first appearances in the Old Testament) comes to talk with Gideon, He doesn’t appear with trumpets blaring or bright lights shining upon Him. Instead, He comes and casually sits under an oak tree. He rests and waits patiently for Gideon to meet Him there. The conversation that Gideon and God have is one of friendship. Gideon questions his own ability to deliver the Israelites and he also poses doubt at God: “the Lord has abandoned us and given us into the hand of Midian” (Judges 6:13). Gideon questions, but he then listens. He doesn’t just talk at God but, as those who are in a relationship with someone should do, he waits for God’s response. Gideon’s obedience to God and his willingness to trust in God lead to God choosing to place His spirit upon Gideon (Judges 6:34) and from then on He is with Gideon always. Throughout the trials of choosing an army and within the battle itself, God journeys beside Gideon, whispering advice, providing protection and giving encouragement. In return, Gideon stands in battle, asking God questions and seeking His guidance. He doesn’t need to go off somewhere to pray but rather he walks in constant conversation with God. The beautiful picture of their relationship together is what we as Christians have to opportunity to have with God ourselves. 1 Thessalonians 5:17 says “pray continually.” Let your conversations with God be at the heart and essence of being a Christian. Gideon recognized and responded to the reality of God’s presence with him always. Have you noticed and talked to Jesus as he sits beside you today?
